December 30, 2023,

If things are not going your way on the fully competitive female wrestling mats, sometimes it is a matter of technique and strategy.

In the world of diplomacy, it is often expressed, it is not what you say; it is how you say it.

One way or another, something needs to be said. Season it with salt.

In the female wrestling world, when something needs to be done, it is a matter of what you do, how you do it and absolutely what not to do.

Make sense?

Perhaps not, so let’s break it down a little, pre-match activities and then move on to the progression of the match.

THE BEGINNING

Before you even start to competitively wrestle, you need to perform the basics.

First, get in great shape with walking, running, sit ups and working out with weights in your home or at the gym. That way, fatigue, and to be direct, being physically weak will not be an issue. Because, if you don’t do the above basic things, being tired and weak during the course of a match will be a big issue.

Next, drum it into your mind that the most basic move in wrestling is to hand fight and get to your opponent’s head and neck area to secure a headlock.

Don’t fall into the trap that so many newer girls do, trying to apply the floor to sitting body scissor right from the beginning. You are setting yourself up to wrestle from your back until your opponent, who is on top, breaks your hold, falls all top of you and submits you.

Pay your dues, fight it out up top.

What makes you better at fighting it out and winning the top position in the initiation stage you need good hand to eye coordination along with arm and upper body strength.

Without arm strength, you can have the best hand movements in the world but if your opponent is stronger than you, she will simply out muscle you. How do you build stronger arms and a powerful feminine upper body?

Let’s walk over to the bookstore.

Sounds very upper body comprehensive.

Hopefully, this flowchart approach, is making sense to you. Go with the flow. Create your own flowchart but follow the basics to lay a foundation to keep moving forward.

Continuing down the flowchart, you are in good shape, have strong arms and a nicely muscled upper body.

Well done.

Practice your grappling, preferably with a male friend to get used to wrestling someone a little stronger than you. But just because they are stronger, does not mean they will defeat you.

Why?

Learn Jiu-Jitsu.

Jujutsu, also known as jiu-jitsu and ju-jitsu, is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents.

Jiu-jitsu dates back to the 1530s.

This form of martial arts uses few or no weapons at all and includes strikes, throws, holds, and paralyzing attacks against the enemy.

Jujutsu developed from the warrior class around the 17th century in Japan. It was designed to supplement the swordsmanship of a warrior during combat.

A subset of techniques from certain styles of jujutsu were used to develop many modern martial arts and combat sports, such as judo, aikido, sambo, ARB, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts.

Therein is the key. Jiu-Jitsu is the gateway to you learning other forms of martial arts or as we like to say, MMA.

When you watch women engage in fully competitive submission wrestling, you will notice arm bars, various chokes and BJJ grappling techniques. The more elite wrestlers are skilled in these arts. If you stay with basic grappling, like the legendary DWW girls did in the early 2000s, time will catch up to you and the newer girls, who committed themselves to learning MMA, will routinely defeat you.

In terms of technique, let’s walk over to the bookstore.

The Complete Guide for Jiu-Jitsu Principles and Concepts – Beginner to Advanced Paperback – May 2, 2022

By Ryan S Villalobos (Author)

“In today’s modern practice and study of Jiu-Jitsu, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the endless amount of content available on technique. You may find yourself taking in too much at once and remembering little when trying to apply what you have learned. While learning technique is critical to progressing in Jiu-Jitsu, principles and concepts are what bind it all.

Focusing on principles as a beginner, will give you better direction and make techniques you learn more applicable. This results in greater success and quicker development.

The advanced practitioner can sometimes lose focus of these principles over time due to the complexity of Jiu-Jitsu. This guide should serve as a reminder to the importance of principles in developing new technique. In The Complete Guide for Jiu-Jitsu Concepts and Principles, you will find both physical and mental training strategies to improve your game.”

See what we mean?

Improve your wrestling game. That’s what it is all about.
