October 5, 2023,

Women continue to make a statement in the world of MMA.

People around the world are listening and watching.

The basis for the statement is the growth of girls wrestling, especially at the high school and collegiate level.

At the Modesto Bee they share, “In 2018-19, high school participation in the sport declined for the first time in 30 years but girls wrestling increased by 27%, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. There were 21,124 girls who wrestled last year compared to 16,562 during the 2017-18 year. In California, there were almost 1,000 new girl wrestlers in 2019 while the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section has doubled its participation from 2016 (540) to this year (1,095).”

With that foundation, it opens the door wide for women to draw attention to their contributions to the Female MMA Industry.

The contributions come in many forms. Sometimes in areas that you might now consider.

One such person that caught our eye is Maya Nazareth.

The team at the University of Delaware (horn.udel.edu) share, “The origin story of Alchemize Fightwear involves a rebellion against hot pink and purple, a statement against male thinking and a push to empower women. The company, founded by Maya Nazareth when she was a 19-year-old University of Delaware student, has been profitable since Day 1.”

That is saying a lot. You can probably understand why we would want to know more about Maya.

Here is her YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/MayaNazareth

Maya smiles with a brief statement, “Trying to create the life I dream about. I started a business in college to set myself free from the 9-5 and now we’re a fast growing company on track to do our first million this year. I’m sharing the journey.”

Are you impressed?

We certainly are.

This video in particular speaks to her journey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_27ACa3xyA

In the video Maya confirms what the Modesto Bee speaks to in terms of growth in female grappling. She began at 16. Over time participating in grappling and learning Jiu-Jitsu increased her confidence and inspired her to start her own company.

Time for a visit alchemizefightwear.com

There Maya educates, “We were exhausted of the fightwear options for women. So we decided to build woman’s gear that made women more comfortable, strong, and radiant. A portion of every sale is donated towards women’s safety initiatives. Every year we partner with a number of women’s trauma recovery and prevention programs. We don’t want to be a part of the problem. That’s why our gear is made to last you years! We’re committed to breaking the cycle of fast fashion.”

Message received.

Let’s turn to film.

We have an A List actress that expands the interest in female MMA.

Halle Berry is an American actress who began her career as a model and entered several beauty contests, finishing as the first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant and coming in sixth in the Miss World 1986.

Her breakthrough film role was in the romantic comedy Boomerang (1992), alongside Eddie Murphy, which led to roles in The Flintstones (1994) and Bulworth (1998) as well as the television film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

So, when a great mind and talent like Halle becomes interested in female MMA, you know the world will be watching. Here is her offering.

Bruised is a 2020 sports drama film starring and directed by Halle Berry in her directorial debut, who also served as the producer.

It co-stars Shamier Anderson, Adan Canto, Sheila Atim, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Adriane Lenox. The screenplay was written by Michelle Rosenfarb.

Bruised had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020 and was later released in select theaters and on Netflix in November 2021.

Very impressive.

Here is the storyline.

Four years after forfeiting a major fight, former UFC fighter Jackie “Pretty Bull” Justice lives with her boyfriend and manager, Desi, in inner-city Newark. Earning a living as a housecleaner, Jackie relies on alcohol to cope with the tedium of her daily life. Desi pushes Jackie to start fighting again, but she refuses, angrily blaming him for mismanaging her career.

Desi takes Jackie to an illegal underground match, hoping to sign a new fighter. Recognized, the “Werewolf” provokes her into fighting. When Jackie finally loses her temper, she pins the Werewolf down and head butts her unconscious. Catching the eye of Immaculate, a local promoter of the all-female MMA league Invicta Fighting Championships, he recruits Jackie.

People seemed to like the film. It received many good reviews.

The movie is fiction but Invicta is very real.

Who are they?

Invicta Fighting Championships, also known as Invicta FC, is an American professional mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion dedicated to Women’s mixed martial arts that was founded in 2012 by Janet Martin and Shannon Knapp.

The promotion is currently owned by the Canadian-based Anthem Sports & Entertainment.

The company’s name comes from the Latin word for “invincible and incomparable”, which appears in the feminine form.

Many of their stars went on to have careers with the mighty UFC.

Here is an online review that speaks to the movie “Bruised” effect on female MMA fans.

“This is a powerful masterpiece that goes far beyond the MMA world. It is quite an amazing and incredible drama story. This is probably one of his best films and one of the most touching and powerful movies combining the genre of sports element with a human drama. Halle Berry should get an Oscar for her performance as a master of her craft both behind and in front of the camera in this emotional story. Each and every actor brings their own well defined character that makes the film a one of a kind masterpiece…even to the young child Manny that does not speak but exhumes so much feeling and emotions throughout his performance. It will move you beyond words!!!”

Good to know.

From the high school and collegiate sports world, to entrepreneurial success in Fight Gear to the silver screen, female MMA is surging in interest.

The industry is making a female statement the world is yearning to hear.
