You can always expand beyond the basics.

As long as you perform the basics well.

Especially in female wrestling.

The most basic move in wrestling is learning and perfecting the headlock.

It is a new year, and hopefully you have plans to expand on your wrestling skills, but always remember to keep practicing the headlock.

In the 2014 era when FCI was doing a lot of filming, two of the greatest headlock performers we worked with were Olivia D’Angelo and Isamar. No one performed head locks better.

In the DWW camp, we always felt that Zsuzsa, due to her smaller size, relied on effective headlocks to take her opponents down.

Whether it is the Lady Pros, female submission wrestlers and the freestyle wrestlers, applying headlocks is their meat and potatoes.

The headlock is the basic wrestling hold.

Those of us who follow the sport know that.

Securing the hold is a whole other matter.

How many determined female grapplers have gotten their opponents into headlocks, only to lose the hold and eventually lose the match?

Some of that is due to technique.

In all fairness, some of that is due to a lack of strength training.

A facet of strength training that will help secure those hold is bicep training.

Indeed.

As a female grappler, you can really use some beastly biceps when you are trying to secure and tighten those locks.

When capturing the headlock, very important, when you take down your opponent, land on top of her. Not the side or the middle.

On top.

To apply it effectively, you should have developed arm, shoulder and back strength to keep your opponent’s head locked underneath yours while you are static in a tight grip.

They will be squirming in anguish but you should be static and unyielding.

Practice that move over and over. We suggest with a male partner. That should give you an advantage when applying it real time with a female partner.

Time to think about your shoulders.

Between strong biceps and powerful shoulders, your hold on your opponent will almost be unbreakable.
