August 25, 2022,

Why did this take so long?

Women have been wrestling in Mexico, on television, for decades.

Scripted.

Her wrestling is for real.

She is the real deal.

Alma Valencia is a Mexican freestyle wrestler.

Pop quiz. Yes, a surprise quiz out of nowhere.

Name one other Mexican female freestyle wrester?

Alma is making news and creating dynamic history.

In the 55 kg category, she won the silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games, having finished seventh in 2011. She won three bronze medals at the Pan American Wrestling Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013. She also won a silver and gold medal at the 2010 and 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games respectively, both in the 55 kg category.

Ms. Valencia qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women’s freestyle 57 kg category at the 2020 Pan American Qualification Tournament in Ottawa, Canada.

Great for her. And us.

She won the silver medal in her event at the 2022 Pan American Wrestling Championships held in Acapulco, Mexico.

As reported by the team at uww.org , “Alma Valencia Escoto (MAX) was the first woman to qualify Mexico for the Olympic Games in wrestling.”

That is a surprising statistic given that Lucha Libre Women’s Wrestling has been around for decades, promoting many great stars.

In becoming the first Mexican woman to reach the Olympic Games, Alma hopes it shows young Mexican girls that they now have someone to look up to.

That they can get involved in fully competitive wrestling at an early age. Most likely freestyle. With growth mirroring the surge in the United States.

Alma is also a mother and a doctor. She graduated from Mexico’s Guadalajara Lamar Universidad medical school in the spring of 2019.

This is most likely the beginning. The movement to grow girl’s freestyle wrestling will have to be a grass roots affair.

At least now, because of Alma, there is an awareness of it.

And a doctor in the house.

Mexico has always been proud of Lucha Libre women’s wrestling.

For good reason.

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide is a Mexican Lucha Libre (professional wrestling) promotion based in Mexico City, Mexico.

The promotion was founded in 1992 when Antonio Peña broke away from Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) to set up a promotion, which allowed him more creative freedom.

In addition to the conventional “squared circle”, the promotion occasionally uses a hexagonal wrestling ring and has a reputation for its outlandish gimmicks and characters as well as having developed a more extreme match style in recent years.

The AAA Reina de Reinas Championship (literally “AAA Queen of Queens Championship”, “AAA Women’s Championship”) is a singles women’s professional wrestling championship promoted by Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA).

It is the only female’s championship currently in AAA.

The pathway to the championship comes with a creative twist.

Being a professional wrestling championship, it is not won legitimately; it is instead won via a scripted ending to a match or awarded to a wrestler because of a storyline.

From its creation in 1999 to 2009, the title was put on the line every year during the eponymous “Reina de Reinas” tournament, in addition to traditional defenses.

The tournament eventually returned in 2012, with Sexy Star becoming the first wrestler to successfully retain the title at the event.

Over the years, AAA has worked together with several American promotions, while currently having working relationships with other Mexican promotions.

AAA has held a number of pay-per-views (PPV) over the years and has promoted shows not just in Mexico but in the United States and Japan as well.

There is more great news in that female wrestling hexagon.
