January 31, 2023,

They have guts. Give them that.

Given what they have recently embarked upon, voluntarily or not, it is hard not to admire them.

Root for them.

In the movie. Absolutely not in real life.

They are brilliant female criminals and their films or TV series are nothing short of captivating.

Let’s make this clear.

We’re not talking about action heroines, fantastical super females with extraordinary antics where you think to yourself, this could never happen in real life.

Nor women out for revenge who murder in unbelievable ways.

Drug dealers neither. The way they kill criminals is super sensational. Entertaining even.

But not believable.

Now don’t think that, from time to time, we don’t enjoy all over the above fantastical. We do.

It’s just not realistic.

It is the realistic female criminal acts that are intriguing.

We would start with “I Spit On Your Grave”, but we wrote about that graphic film in graphic and extensive detail in another article. If you’ve already seen it, you’ll know what we mean.

So, let’s start with Ms .45.

Yeah, that kind of 45 with a kick. Bing, bam, boom.

Ms .45, also known as Angel of Vengeance, is a 1981 American violent thriller film directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Zoë Tamerlis.

Inspired by films such as Thriller – A Cruel Picture (1973), Death Wish (1974), and Taxi Driver (1976), the film is a rape and revenge story about Thana, a mute woman who becomes a spree killer after she is raped twice in one day when going home from work.

It was critically detested on its theatrical release, but is now generally highly regarded among fans of underground and independent film.

Count us in as a delayed fan. We never saw it before, until we saw it.

Charles Bronson would be proud.

What we liked about it was that after being a victim, she decided not to stay one. Her revenge violence is believable and at some point she appears to enjoy it along the way, taking out men who play their despicable parts very well.

She looks so demur and sweet that most of the undesirables don’t remotely see it coming.

What makes it special as well is that the believable and captivating actress, Zoe Lund, passed away in real life at 37 years old and unfortunately we will not see her on the screen again, but in this gem, we’re really glad we did.

We go from extremely violent to tame and treacherous.

But very believable.

Inventing Anna is an American drama television miniseries created and produced by Shonda Rhimes, inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin and the article in New York titled “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler.

The series was released on Netflix.

Julia Garner, of Ozark fame, stars as Anna Sorokin, the title character. The series received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances (particularly Garner’s) but criticized the inconsistent tone.

Inconsistent tone? Sounds tone deaf.

This film was brilliant.

Here is the storyline.

Under the assumed name Anna Delvey, Russian-born Anna Sorokin is able to con members of New York City’s upper crust into believing she is a German heiress with access to a substantial fortune.

She uses this persona to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, goods and services while working towards her goal of opening an exclusive art-themed club.

Why do we root for her?

Along the way she places a mirror in front of the so-called elite, upper crust and self-righteous that in the end you hope she gets away with it.

From our view, she didn’t really make people do what they didn’t want to do. Mostly.

Why was it so important to have a piece of her?

It was her grit, guts and audacity to ask for things that most of us would never dream of.

Now, it is time for the queen of them all.

Even though she and Emily in Paris, have the same first name, trust us, no two women named Emily could be more different.

Emily the Criminal is a 2022 American crime thriller film written and directed by John Patton Ford in his feature film debut.

It stars Aubrey Plaza, Theo Rossi, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Gina Gershon.

It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2022, and was released in the United States on August 12, 2022, by Vertical Entertainment and Roadside Attractions. It received generally positive reviews from critics for its social commentary and Plaza’s performance.

Social commentary?

After watching this quiet masterpiece, you will want to comment.

Here is the storyline.

Emily lives in Los Angeles and is deeply in debt (at least 70 grand).

She struggles to pay off her student loans, largely because a felony conviction prevents her from obtaining a well-paying job.

Consequently, she delivers food as an “independent contractor” (translation: low pay) for a catering company.

A co-worker connects Emily to a “dummy shopper” service that promises to make her $200 in one hour.

The service is revealed to be a credit card fraud ring, and Emily meets Youcef, one of its organizers, who instructs her to purchase a flat-screen TV using a fake card and ID. The next day, Emily is sent on a larger job (purchasing a car on a no-limit credit card) which goes poorly after the dealer discovers the scam, leading to a physical altercation.

Guess what?

Innocent looking Emily survives a head bash and nose bleed and it changes her for good.

What captivated us about the film was how Emily figured out, as, in all fairness, so many of us don’t, that in this life, one person after another will take advantage of you if they can.

If you let them.

And they don’t respect you for it.

They don’t feel sorry for you.

And, if you let them do it again. They will.

Her confrontations with Job Interviewers, are classic. Especially the one who wanted her to be an Intern, in a highly desirable position, for free.

Emily made it clear in no uncertain terms what she thought of her and the audacity to ask someone to work for free.

Emily’s position is, don’t be a victim.

The perpetrator is not the one to be afraid of.

You are.

What a concept.

And, she follows through on that philosophy in real and painful terms. The antagonists are either unwilling or unable to come back for seconds.

No matter what she does to them, we don’t feel sorry for them. We have met too many predators (with a soft smile) in our life and we didn’t impress upon them that we are the ones to be feared as Emily so brilliantly and violently did.

We watched this film three times.

This is in part why we like Female Submission Wrestlers.

It takes a lot of moxie and guts to get out on those grappling mats in front of a live audience and video viewers around the world and show them what you are made of.

Not everyone has the courage to do that.

Like Emily, it is all in how you view yourself.

Don’t be a victim.

You are the one to be afraid of.
