Female Grapplers, Understand Passive, Apply The Aggressive Approach, Some Examples
October 22, 2023,
There are no rules against employing both of these tactics during a female submission wrestling match.
It would be hard to apply the rules since most of the tactics are inside of your head.
When it comes to your particular match, you can be aggressive, which we would suggest, or passive, which we would not suggest.
We suggest being overly aggressive because you’re not going to hit a homerun, unless you take a swing.
The only weakness in the plan, especially for a newer wrestler, is that sometimes in their aggressive charge, they walk right into a Guillotine Choke because the come in with their head down. Be aggressive with your head up, especially when attempting a headlock.
There are very few matches where we have seen a passive, reactionary approach be effective and that was when the legendary Inferno of England defeated Vox of Hungary. The English maiden was very effective in luring Vox into the wrong positions by being passive, reacting then responding. On her profile, Inferno states she was trained in and is a practitioner of Taekwondo.
At her profile she states, “I have 15 years experience in Taekwondo and have previously won a European championship.”
Exceptional accomplishment.
Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts involving punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques.
The literal translation for tae kwon do is “kicking”, “punching”, and “the art or way of”.
This is a kind of martial arts in which one attacks or defends with hands and feet anytime or anywhere, with occasional use of weapons.
The physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament.
Inferno certainly demonstrated, strength of mind, as she countered virtually every attack that Vox tried to mount.
Taekwondo practitioners wear a uniform, known as a dobok.
It is a combat sport and was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists with experience in martial arts such as karate and Chinese martial arts.
Judo is another discipline where a reactionary approach is often employed.
Judo. Also called the gentle way, is an unarmed modern Japanese martial art, Olympic sport (since 1964), and the most prominent form of jacket wrestling competed internationally.
Judo was created in 1882 by Kanō Jigorō as an eclectic martial art.
The objective of competitive judo is to throw an opponent, immobilize them with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke.
In terms of a more passive approach, we saw Silvie of the Czech Republic wrestle a very passive match against Kimbra, which was very surprising, since that is typically not her style.
She lost the match.
More than once we’ve seen Serbia’s Rage fight from a sitting position with her legs thrust outward, daring her opponent to try and break that barrier with mediocre results.
In her match against Kim of Hungary, Ireland’s Siren Max began the match with her two arms up like a fence, waiting for Kim to attack her, which Kim did and pushed her backward against the wall.
We saw Hungary’s Dolly take a passive approach against Bianca of Italy and literally spent 95 percent of the match, on her back, defending against the tactical brunette who eventually won the match. In Dolly’s case there, how can you win a match when you mount no offense?
At some point, you need to score.
Thus, even with mistakes, we find that the aggressive approach, hand fighting to get to a headlock, take down your opponent and use your body to fall down on top of them, is a great approach.
Then you apply your Jiu Jitsu skills to move closer to a submission.
A passive approach is to use one hold, like an arm bar or body scissor to obtain the submission.
A more aggressive and effective approach is to use two holds to attempt the submission. An arm bar and body scissor combination, a headlock and scissor combination or a choke and scissor combination is the more effective aggressive approach.
So, learning passive martial arts approaches is fine but the more aggressive forms of Jiu Jitsu, in our extensive match video reviews, are far more effective.
Let’s focus in on Jiu Jitsu and walk over to the bookstore.
Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense: When the Fight Goes to the Ground (Includes DVD) Paperback – October 3, 2017
By Lori O’Connell (Author), Steve Hiscoe (Foreword), Jennifer Weintz (Foreword)
“In a street defense scenario, the ground is a dangerous place to be. While it’s a good idea to learn defensive strategies for ground fighting, it is important to put those skills into the context of how you want to use them. Whether you’re an experienced submission-grappling competitor, a traditional martial artist training in a stand-up striking style, or law enforcement professional, Ground Defense provides you with an essential system of self-protection for street-oriented ground scenarios.
Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense: When the Fight Goes to the Ground establishes the risks and hazards of various ground defense scenarios, presenting effective strategies for neutralizing and minimizing them. You will learn a wide range of tools for defense, including the targeting of vital areas, body shifting/control techniques, and the concept of “weapons of opportunity.” All of these techniques are easy to learn and apply, providing an adaptable skill set for anyone, regardless of size, strength or gender. These tools are then shown in various combinations, with examples of how to use them against specific types of attacks, including simple hold-downs, ground and pound, submission grappling pins, chokes, arm locks, leg locks, knife attacks and multiple assailant scenarios.
In addition, this martial arts book gives you useful training suggestions and regimens, addressing graduated skill development, challenges presented by different body types, and safety practices at all levels of training.”
Fantastic info.
Sounds like a great read that combines the aggressive and defensive approach to attack and defend yourself, which will ready you to be aggressive again.
In any competitive sport, learn all avenues to victory, here, being passive and aggressive. At least understand both. But in our extensive video viewing experience?
Ultimately the aggressive approach secures the victory.
